This reading was about love and finding the one u are meant to be with, and knowing that you are settled and happy. It spoke about how you know you are not in love when and if someone better comes along to are quick to leave your spouse for them. Many people jump to the idea of money and luxury, when really the emotional attachment is what will make a good relationship last. The reading also lets you know that if you are set on finding on specific type of guy or girl the chances are you will find them, but will they be looking for you? It gives you a really good understanding of going after those who will accept you for who you are and not what you come from.

This reading was about policer officers as well as higher officials, doing what is needed to prevent danger. The reading talked about 2 acts of murder, that were done by officials, against suspected terrorists. The point behind the readings were basically to let the reader realize that desperate times call for desperate measures. Sometimes, when someone is thought to be doing something extremely wrong, such as terrorists attacks, officials have to go after them and brutally kill them without giving them a chance to speak. The first story spoke of how an officer killed someone who was disabled yet could still have the ability to kill him or someone else. It seems wrong and immoral to kill a disabled person but when your life is on the line, in that split second you do what you have to do. I think that both of these stories called for desperate measures because you never know what someone is capable of.

This reading was about the effects and meaning of war. It was written by a former solider who experienced first hand what war was like. He explained that "war makes the world understandable." He believes that it comes along with many challenges, however, certain situations require it. He spoke about his own medical issues and what he has gone through during the time period that he was at war. He had been held captive, had a nervous twitch, expected to die numerous times, and was evacuated by the U.S. embassy three times. It was interesting to read the part where he said, "There is a part of me-maybe it is a part of many of us-that decided at certain moments that I would rather die like this than go back to the routine of life." That part stuck out to me because when you are in a situation such as war, you see a whole new world, and its almost as if going back to normal everyday life is not moral anymore after seeing what goes on over seas.

Chapter 10 Response

The Rogerian argument basically finds a common interest or a common ground between an argument or a debate. It is a way to lighten up the feud or the controversy and find something that two or more people might have in common that they would have never thought they had. Instead of debating and throwing rebuttals back and forth, the Rogerian argument is a way to find the connections despite the opposite sides taken.

Page 626 Reading Response- DNA Test

I thought that this reading was interesting because a classroom of students who thought they knew their backgrounds, got to get a DNA test done to see if there is some ethnicity inside them that they aren't sure about. A lot of them who were black, ended up having some type of whiteness in them, like Irish. Even though they acquired these genes, people still judge them by what they see on the outside. However, one person said that even though he found out he has some type of white gene inside of him, he is not just going to begin acting white all of the sudden. I believe that if you don't know your DNA makeup for a good majority of your life and then you discover what it is, it is completely up to you whether or not you want to bring that part of you out into the open, or if you just want to remain the way you have been living. I personally do not think its necessary to change the way you act just because you find out part of you is white, black, asian, or any type of other culture.

Response to Reading

Professor Ray

Reading this section on technology actually made me realize how guilty I am of the majority of issues discussed.  The reading that stuck out the most to me was about Facebook. Now of days it seems that Facebook controls the lives of everyone around us. It tells you whose birthday is today, who is dating, who has just broken up, who is in a fight, and so on. I know personally that I check Facebook multiple times a day and I get my notifications sent to my phone, so I am literally never away from it. Even while I am writing this, Facebook is on my Internet screen. Sure, it gets old and boring, but you just really can’t resist checking it. However, I do think that there are positives to having a Facebook. I do think it is a great way to keep in touch with friends while away at college. Throughout the days people are too busy to call or text, so to log onto Facebook and send a little message to someone makes it quick and easy. I also think that there is a certain age where Facebook could be dangerous and that is another issue that concerns people about the Web. I don’t think that young girls and boys should be on Facebook while they are in middle school because that is when you are most vulnerable and older people know that. I can see how the Web can be risky but can also be beneficial. It was interesting to read this section and realize how many people actual match the description of a “Facebook Stalker.” It’s definitely a hard habit to break but eventually it will grow old just like everything else.
